The head of the Automobile Importers Association continued: in order to implement this issue, the Export and Import Regulatory Office and the project support organization must approve it.

Regarding the clearance of cars with an engine capacity of more than 2,500 cc, he said: “According to the expert committee of the Court of Justice, cars that have been registered before the date of the circular banning the import of cars over 2,500 cc can enter the country.”

Ehteshamzad added: “Of course, this is not the decision of the Court of Justice, but the opinion of the expert committee, and therefore it will not be enforceable until the decision is issued and announced by the Court of Justice.”

According to him, the number of these cars is between 100 and 150 units.

Referring to the import of 32,428 vehicles to the country during the first six months of this year, he said: “The value of these vehicles was $ 850 million and 56 types of vehicles have been imported into the country.”

According to him, 2.6 thousand billion Rials of import tax has been paid for the import of these cars and 285 billion Rials of tax has been paid to the government account for numbering.

He said that the ratio of imports to car production during the first six months of this year was 6 percent, adding that the average figure in previous years was 4 to 5 percent.

Ehteshamzad predicted that 60,000 vehicles would enter the country this year.

Referring to the 4.25 percent share of cars in the country’s basket of imported goods, he said: “In 1993 and 1994, the UAE ranked first in terms of the origin of car imports to Iran, followed by China and Kuwait.”

He added: “During the first 6 months of this year, the UAE’s share in the origin of cars imported to Iran was 69.3%, which shows a decrease of 7% compared to previous years, followed by Korea with 13.3%, Germany with 5.4%, Oman with 2.4 Percent and Kuwait with 2.2 percent are in the next categories.

Ehteshamzad announced Renault and Lexus as the fastest brands in the imported car market and said: Hyundai, Kia and Toyota are ranked first to third in terms of car imports to Iran.

“We may now be in an equal position in negotiations with foreign companies,” he said. “We may have to have an indirect representative to import some cars.”

“This kind of definition makes fun of us because the definition is wrong and engine size should not be the criterion for a luxury car,” he said, referring to the definition of luxury cars based on price.

* Standards stop car imports

Kourosh Morshed Selouk, vice president of the Automobile Importers Association, said in the press conference that the association does not oppose the standardization, optimization and organization of imported cars. And Iran’s geography is not the same as Europe, and in addition, the condition of roads in Iran does not meet European road standards.

He continued: “Restrictions on car imports increase car depreciation and increase consumer costs, and in such circumstances, parent companies are not willing to export cars directly to Iran with these standards, because the cost of depreciation and car warranty in Iran will increase due to different climatic and geographical conditions.

Referring to the cabinet decision to improve the quality of fuel, Morshid Seluk said: “The Ministry of Oil should have taken steps to improve the quality of gasoline to the standards of Euro 5 and 6, but this is while the distributed gasoline in the country is not even Euro 4.”

He added: “In this situation, the car should be imported according to the Euro 5 standard, while the use of Euro 4 gasoline in a car with the Euro 5 standard will cause damage to the car, increase the cost of depreciation and more air pollution.”

“We need to know that a significant portion of the sanctions continue, and in addition, some parent companies are unwilling to comply with our mandatory standards,” he said.

According to Murshid Saluk, the standards are stopping the import of cars.
