In a general classification, colors are divided into two categories: permissible and unauthorized.


Unauthorized dyes are used to dye carpets and clothes, and unfortunately, due to their cheapness, they have at least found their way into food. It goes without saying that the production and supply of such dyes in the food industry is the work of some profiteers, and you can not find traces of them among standard and licensed foods.

But permitted dyes are divided into three groups: The first group are natural dyes that originate from different plants and natural materials. The second group is similar natural groups whose formula is similar to natural dyes but has a chemical origin, and the third group is chemical dyes that are basically chemically prepared.

Proper use of approved colors can not have an adverse effect on people’s health, but their excessive use can affect the flavor of food and endanger the health of consumers. Food colors are no exception. European experts will stop producing any products if they see any shortcomings, but unfortunately there is no secondary monitoring system in Iran. Maybe this is because our country is more of an importer than a producer of food dyes.

Do not buy Arabic saffron!

Unfortunately, these days it is often seen that Iranian pilgrims try to import food coloring called Arabic saffron from the Persian Gulf countries, unaware that this substance does not have the approval of the Ministry of Health and unlicensed souvenirs are an imported disease! So if you do not like to give sick souvenirs to your loved ones, avoid buying unknown foods such as Arabic saffron.

Moving towards nature

Based on the latest global advances in food coloring: “The world is now moving towards organic and natural foods with the least amount of chemicals in them. European consumers are no longer thinking about advancing the production of chemical additives in foodstuffs. “They have minimized the consumption of foods with dyes and additives.”

The use of natural foods of the people is suggested: “Fortunately, the authorities of our country have also thought of producing organic and natural products, and soon organic chickens and eggs will be introduced to the market.” He emphasizes the role of culture in the consumption of organic foods and the elimination of unnatural and chemical foods.

How to distinguish between allowed and unauthorized colors

To determine if your food coloring is permissible or not, you can dissolve some of it in lukewarm water and in a white ceramic container. If your color dissolves quickly and your container changes color (that is, the effect remains on the container after emptying the container), it means that you are using an unauthorized color.

Go for natural colors

You do not need to use artificial and harmful colors to decorate and shape your food. Knowing and using natural colors can ensure the health of you and your family members. If you do not know how to do this, you can start with a few colors:

– Beet juice for red

– Spinach or parsley juice for green color

– Safflower for yellow

– Saffron for orange color

– Cocoa powder for making cakes and sweets
