Customs banned live tilapia from entering the country
Customs banned live tilapia from entering the country, and an illegal fish farming workshop in Arak was sealed by the Environment Organization. The import of tilapia live fish is strongly opposed and the head of the organization has announced the reasons for this opposition in writing to the Ministry of Jihad Agriculture and the General Inspection Organization.
Managing Director of the Aquaculture Breeding and Export Union: Many scientific articles state that vulnerable groups and pregnant women should use this meat with caution and should not use it as much as possible. “What is the reason for promoting meat that we know is problematic for health?”
Following the announcement of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Customs Administration issued a circular to all customs units in the country, announcing that they would deal with any import of live tilapia, which is a highly invasive and destructive aquatic species to aquatic ecosystems, and prevent customs clearance.
This order was issued while the Environmental Protection Organization has been opposed to any reproduction and breeding of tilapia by the fishery in the country for 8 years, but the Fisheries Organization continues to reproduce and breed such non-tilapia by justifying job creation and due to the huge profits from its breeding. Indigenous and highly aggressive that can destroy the entire population of our country’s native fish. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency last week managed to identify and seal an unauthorized workshop unit that was breeding tilapia.
Omid Sedighi, senior expert of the Aquatic Office of the Environmental Protection Agency, told “Iran” about this: “As you know, the Environmental Organization is strongly opposed to any breeding, reproduction and import of live tilapia, and the head of the organization also explained the reasons for this opposition to the Ministry of Jihad.”
Agriculture and the National Inspection Agency have announced in writing. However, conducting research on non-native and invasive species in accordance with environmental considerations and in completely isolated conditions is not prohibited by the organization, and therefore the environment a few years ago by conducting studies on indigo tilapia in Yazd Fisheries Research Center He agreed that, unfortunately, they did not fulfill all their obligations, and sometimes we saw this fish go to other breeding ponds in this province.
The expert added: “Today, the disaster that has befallen the rivers and aquatic animals of Khuzestan province due to the arrival of a type of tilapia called Zilai tilapia is not hidden from anyone, and because it is feared that tilapia, like other invasive and non-native species by various devices in It has been imported to the country in the past decades, to enter all the waters and ecosystems of the country, so we have announced that no other center except Bafgh Yazd Research Center has the right to reproduce this fish.
In this regard, thanks to the efforts of our environmental colleagues in the General Department of Environment of Markazi Province, 6,000 non-native juveniles and tilapia attackers, who were reported in an illegal workshop around Arak, complained to the court and were killed by the prosecutor. According to the World Union for Conservation of Nature, the aquatic species Tilapia is one of the most highly endangered species in the world, and if it enters aquatic ecosystems as a non-native species, it could cause the extinction of all native fish species. However, for unknown reasons, a species of tilapia called Zilai tilapia entered the waters of Khuzestan province 5 years ago for unknown reasons, which has caused severe damage to fishermen and even fish farmers in this province, and the native fish species of Khuzestan called Syrup has become extinct.
However, no authority in the country has yet claimed responsibility for the fish entering the province’s rivers, and no attempt is being made to breed the Indigo tilapia, which is far more dangerous than the Zili tilapia, in the country without a solution.
Therefore, Masoumeh Ebtekar, the head of the Environmental Protection Organization, recently sent a letter to the country’s customs, announcing that due to the widespread threats of non-native and invasive tilapia species and to prevent its unauthorized entry, any import of live fish into the country is prohibited. Be. In this regard, Ali Akbar Shamani, Director General of the Center for Import and Affairs of Special Free Zones, has announced to all executive customs in accordance with the export and import regulations of the Trade Development Organization of Iran and at the request of the Environmental Protection Organization to prevent clearance of non-native species and invasive tilapia. Considering that in order to prevent environmental hazards, the import of live fish consignments is required to provide a certificate of the Environmental Protection Organization in accordance with the regulations and any clearance of live fish consignments from the country’s customs is prohibited.
Opponents of tilapia
Now, it is not only the environmental organization that opposes tilapia, but also the Ministry of Energy, which opposes the breeding of this fish, and has expressed concern about its possible entry into reservoirs behind dams. Meanwhile, the director of the Aquaculture Breeding and Export Union has recently announced: “We should not import anything that is profitable to produce. Tilapia meat is primarily poor quality fish meat, which is sometimes harmful. Many scientific articles also say that vulnerable groups and pregnant women should use this meat with caution and not use it as much as possible. “What is the reason for promoting meat that we know is problematic for health?”
